Theft of BT cable between Stubton & Claypole

There have been reports of BT cable theft, between Stubton and Claypole, leading to disruptions and costs for BT and affected communities. Theft of BT cables, often for their copper value, can cause significant inconvenience and potential safety risks, particularly for those relying on landlines and broadband.

The cable theft was reported by a Claypole man on Monday 14th. More details involving the vehicles and escape route was also reported. Since this date Openreach have slaved to make good the theft of the cable. I am pleased to see a large concrete block has been placed closing off the escape route used by the thieves on Claypole Road.

Impact and Costs:

  • Disruption of Landlines and Broadband: Cable theft can disconnect homes and businesses from landlines and broadband internet, impacting communication and online services.
  • Safety Concerns: In remote areas, reliance on landlines for emergency calls can be critical, making cable theft a safety hazard.
  • BT Costs: BT incurs significant expenses for replacing stolen cables, engineering work, and new alarms.
  • Economic Costs: The total economic cost includes the impact on businesses, freight delays, and personal inconveniences.

Prevention and Security:

  • Security Measures: BT Openreach employs security measures like monitoring and alarms to detect and respond to cable theft.
  • Invisible Markers: Openreach is also testing invisible markers to deter cable thieves.
  • Community Awareness: Raising awareness among residents and businesses about cable theft can help in reporting suspicious activities.

NB: I believe an email has been sent with more details on the theft to certain individuals, hoping that it can reveal the culprits.
