Remembrance poppy fall displays and commemorative wartime silhouettes have been installed outside Grantham’s Guildhall Arts Centre by South Kesteven District Council.
The poppies will provide a colourful backdrop for the annual Remembrance commemoration in Grantham on 8th November which will include a military march past the Guildhall after the service in St Wulfram’s Church.
Hundreds of handmade poppies were stitched onto military camo netting in council-funded community workshops in 2023 with the first displays installed that year.
Grantham Arts organised the workshops and co-ordinated research by Grantham College students into local military history. Students then painted four distinctive wooden military figures; a WWI Tommy, WWII Para, a Land Girl and a wartime Wren.
The Wren silhouette carries the name of Grantham woman Joan Briggs, who served in the Navy in WWII and visited the display when it first went up.
Anne Marie Kerr from Grantham Arts oversaw this year’s Guildhall display installation.
Footnote: Stubton has an appropriate wreath on the new sign.
