Flag raising launches 2026 Armed Forces Week

SKDC Press Release – 22 June 2026

The Armed Forces flag was raised over St Peters Hill in Grantham today (22 June) to launch Armed Forces Week.

South Kesteven District Council’s official ceremony was attended by past and serving military and guests and included elected SKDC members, Royal British Legion (RBL), Royal Air Force Association, Merchant Navy, Royal Navy Association, Scouts, council officers and Grantham Town councillors.

They were joined by RBL, King’s School and Navy standard bearers and cadets from the King’s School Combined Cadet Force and 47F (Grantham) Squadron Air Cadets.

The Last Post and Reveille were played by Staff Sgt Samy Almerie and the flag was raised by Sgt Ollie Horsfall, both from the King’s School Combined Cadet Force.

South Kesteven District Council Vice Chair Cllr Pam Byrd thanked cadets for attending and paid tribute to young recruits taking the oath for the first time, seasoned veterans and families who wait, hope and support from afar.

She said: “The flag that we are about to raise is so much more than cloth and colour. It is a living emblem of courage, sacrifice and unity.

“It represents the steadfastness of our Armed Forces, their readiness to respond to challenges and the unwavering commitment to the values we hold dear: duty, honour and service.

“While we may not all serve on the front line, we each have a role to play. We can support veterans’ charities, welcome service members into our communities and ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten. Let this day inspire us to turn respect into action.”

Prince William of Gloucester Barracks Commanding Officer Lt Col Duncan Lowe  delivered a message to serving military, veterans, young people and families.

He said: “Today, as this flag rises into the sky, it carries with it our pride, not just in our uniform but in the people of this country who stand behind us.

“Whether on operations abroad or supporting communities here at home in time of crisis, we often serve with a quiet dedication. But behind every soldier, sailor, aviator and marine is a network of families, friends, employers and citizens who support, understand and stand with us.

“To veterans, you paved the way. To the young people here today, the flag you ‘ll see raised is more than fabric, it’s an invitation to be something bigger than yourself.

“And to this community, thank you for your support, for your kindness to our service families and for never forgetting those who wear the uniform.”

Father Stuart Cradduck of St Wulfram’s Church said a prayer of thanksgiving and Flt Sgt Will Simons, King’s School CCF and school head boy, read part of the Poem for the Fallen.

The flag will fly over St Peter’s Hill for the duration of Armed Forces Week (22-27 June)
